Street Glitter Gallery

This was the website for the Street Glitter Gallery in Philadelphia. As of 2025 Yelpers have reported that the gallery is closed. The gallery use to offer a space for local, independent artists to market their work, as well as being a source for the public to access high-quality, handmade artistic pieces for affordable prices. However, the site's domain registration was allowed to expire. The site disappeared from the web. It was about 5 years ago that upon returning from an extended stay in the Hawaiian Island of  Maui I discovered the Street Glitter Gallery domain was available. I was so surprised. At first I thought the gallery had folded, but that wasn't the case  5 years ago. So I bought the domain for streetglittergallery.com with the goal of keeping this lovely place visible on the web and encouraging folks to visit the gallery when visiting Philadelphia. The content you find on this page was taken from the streetglittergallery.com's archived pages, so the info regarding the news is several years old now.  I invite you to take a nostalgic stroll back to 2014 when they were announcing a party to celebrate their one year anniversary celebration.

Street Glitter 1 Year Anniversary Party!

Tucked in a classic Philadelphia row home on Girard Avenue’s ‘model block’ sits Street Glitter Gallery. Street Glitter opened in the Fall of 2013 with a small collective of fifteen local artists, operated by Casey Lynch and Tami Horvath, both artists themselves, with a business model that serves both collector and creator.

Growing from fifteen to sixty artists, Street Glitter Gallery has become a destination for gift shopping and art collecting. This is a place for undiscovered, underground, and emerging local artists to gain visibility and develop a following. Tami and Casey strive to showcase these artists through their Glitter on the Go pop-up gallery series. It is through this program they have become the house curators for American Sardine Bar and have plans to expand into three more locations in the coming year.

Street Glitter has also received positive airplay from various local media:

More Background on StreetGlitterGallery.com

Street Glitter Gallery was more than just a retail space; it was a vibrant hub for Philadelphia's thriving community of independent artists. Located at 306 E Girard Avenue in the Fishtown neighborhood, the gallery, founded by Tami Horvath and Casey Lynch in partnership with artist/owner Victor Perez, quickly became known for its eclectic collection of handmade art, vintage finds, and unique events. While its original website, streetglittergallery.com, is no longer active, its legacy as a champion of local talent and a purveyor of quirky treasures lives on in the memories of those who visited and the artists it supported. This article delves into the history, offerings, cultural impact, and lasting impressions of Street Glitter Gallery.

Genesis and Vision

Street Glitter Gallery emerged in the fall of 2013, filling a void in Fishtown's already burgeoning arts and entertainment scene. Tami Horvath and Casey Lynch, the co-owners, envisioned a space where emerging and "undiscovered" artists could showcase their work without the constraints of traditional gallery settings. The gallery occupied the former location of Push Skateboards, retaining a bit of that edgy, alternative spirit while transforming it into a welcoming and accessible space for art lovers of all kinds. The concept was simple yet effective: provide a platform for local artists to sell their creations directly to the public, fostering a connection between creator and consumer. This approach resonated with both artists seeking exposure and buyers looking for unique, handmade items that reflected the spirit of the community.

Offerings: A Kaleidoscope of Creativity

Street Glitter Gallery defied easy categorization. It wasn't just a fine art gallery, a craft store, or a vintage shop; it was a blend of all three, creating a shopping experience that was always surprising and engaging. The gallery's inventory included:

  • Fine Art and Prints: Paintings, prints, and mixed-media pieces by local artists, ranging in style from contemporary to whimsical.
  • Jewelry: Handmade jewelry crafted from a variety of materials, often incorporating vintage or repurposed elements.
  • Sculpture: Three-dimensional art pieces, from small figurines to larger, more elaborate sculptures.
  • Antique and Vintage Items: A curated selection of vintage clothing, accessories, and home goods, adding a touch of nostalgia to the gallery's offerings.
  • Up-cycled Skateboard Lamps and Furniture: Paying homage to the space's previous tenant, Street Glitter Gallery featured creative furniture and lamps made from repurposed skateboards, showcasing the ingenuity of local artisans.
  • Oddities: Armadillo wax, fighting robots, and other unusual items that added to the gallery's quirky and eclectic atmosphere.

The constantly evolving inventory ensured that there was always something new to discover at Street Glitter Gallery, making it a favorite destination for gift shopping and personal indulgence.

Community Engagement and Events

Street Glitter Gallery understood the importance of community engagement and hosted a variety of events to draw in visitors and create a lively atmosphere. Some notable events included:

  • Anniversary Parties: Celebrations marking the gallery's anniversary, featuring music, art, and refreshments.
  • Holiday Shopping Kickoffs: Special events coinciding with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, offering deals, rewards, and a festive atmosphere.
  • Themed Shopping Days: Such as "Ladies Day" with mimosas and jewelry, and "Boys and Bourbon" with bourbon tastings and last-minute gift ideas.
  • Art Openings: Showcasing the work of individual artists or groups of artists, providing a platform for them to connect with the community.
  • Participation in Local Events: Such as the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby, where the gallery hosted a viewing party.
  • "Glitter on the Go" Pop-Up Gallery Series: Taking their mission beyond their walls, Tami and Casey curated art displays at locations like American Sardine Bar, extending the reach of their artists.

These events not only brought people into the gallery but also helped to foster a sense of community among artists, shoppers, and neighbors.

Press and Media Coverage

Street Glitter Gallery garnered attention from local media outlets, further solidifying its position as a noteworthy cultural institution in Philadelphia. Media mentions included:

  • WHYY: Interviewed for being one of the first brick-and-mortar businesses in Philadelphia to accept Bitcoin.
  • Action News: Featured for holiday shopping during Small Business Saturday.
  • Fishtown Star and Spirit: Covered the gallery's grand opening carnival.
  • Racked Philly: Highlighted as a go-to shopping destination for Mother's Day gifts.
  • The Halfassed Podcast: Interview with the owners about the gallery's mission and offerings.

These media appearances helped to raise awareness of Street Glitter Gallery and its commitment to supporting local artists and providing a unique shopping experience.

Cultural and Social Significance

Street Glitter Gallery played a significant role in the cultural and social fabric of Fishtown and Philadelphia as a whole. It provided:

  • A Platform for Local Artists: Giving emerging and undiscovered artists a space to showcase and sell their work, fostering their careers and contributing to the city's artistic ecosystem.
  • A Unique Shopping Experience: Offering a curated selection of handmade art, vintage items, and quirky oddities that couldn't be found anywhere else.
  • A Community Hub: Hosting events and gatherings that brought together artists, shoppers, and neighbors, creating a sense of community and belonging.
  • Economic Support for the Local Economy: By supporting local artists and artisans, Street Glitter Gallery contributed to the economic vitality of Fishtown and the surrounding area.

The Expiration of a Domain, The Continuation of a Legacy

The story takes an unexpected turn with the expiration of the streetglittergallery.com domain. While the physical gallery remained open, the website's disappearance from the web raised concerns about its online visibility. However, a former Queens assistant district attorney named Benjamin Pred, stepped in to purchase the domain with the intention of preserving the gallery's online presence and encouraging visitors. This act of goodwill highlights the enduring impact of Street Glitter Gallery and the dedication of its supporters.

The Present and Future

As of today, Street Glitter Gallery is still open. The gallery continues to operate at 306 E. Girard Avenue. It serves as a haven for local, independent artists to showcase and sell their work, while also providing the public with access to high-quality, handmade artistic pieces at affordable prices.

Street Glitter Gallery was more than just a store; it was a vibrant community hub, a champion of local artists, and a purveyor of unique and quirky treasures. Its impact on the Fishtown neighborhood and the Philadelphia art scene was significant, and its legacy continues to inspire those who value creativity, community, and the power of handmade art. While its original website may be gone, the spirit of Street Glitter Gallery lives on in the memories of its visitors, the work of the artists it supported, and the ongoing efforts to keep its story alive.
